Solutions

Cross-platform mobile app using React Native

We used React Native to build a modern, lightweight app that runs smoothly on both Android and iOS. With our custom internal framework, we optimized communication between frontend and backend for real-time location sharing, ride tracking, and background activity logging.

Modular backend with event-based notifications

The backend is built using NestJS and PostgreSQL. All user actions - from joining a ride to starting one solo - trigger relevant events and in-app notifications. This modular architecture makes it easy to introduce gamified features later without disrupting core logic.

Privacy-focused design and role-based access

We designed the system so that users only access what’s needed based on their role (driver, passenger, solo). For example, once a ride starts, only the active ride screen is available. This reduces distractions and ensures focus and safety.

Users who bike or walk to work can track their route and distance in real time. The app works in the background and records eco-movement for gamified rewards. This ensures non-drivers are included and motivated equally.

Step by Step

Scoping

We held strategy sessions to define the MVP structure and roadmap. Ride and Stride was split into clear roles and flows: driver, passenger, solo mover. The system is built to support expansion into companies and corporate ESG programs.

UX Research

We studied user motivations and pain points in commuting. Special attention was given to safety, data sharing, and daily ease of use. Based on interviews and competitor analysis, we designed flows that feel familiar and frictionless.

Style Guide

The visual language is clean, friendly, and dynamic. Green tones reflect sustainability, while bright accent colors are used for gamified elements and reward triggers. Typography and iconography are optimized for mobile readability.

Design

Each screen was designed for clarity and momentum. From ride setup to activity tracking, the UI leads the user with minimal taps. Users only see content relevant to their role and current context (e.g., during active rides).

05Software Architecture and Development

The frontend is built in React Native and designed to work offline during tracking sessions. The backend runs on NestJS with PostgreSQL and uses websocket/event bus tech for real-time updates.

Location data is handled with privacy in mind, and ride logic ensures users only access relevant info. The system is modular, making it easy to add company admin dashboards, carbon calculators, or third-party integrations in the future.

Testing and Collecting Users' Feedback

The app was tested internally in multiple commuting scenarios: biking, walking, and shared rides. Beta users confirmed that the app was intuitive and motivating. Their feedback is shaping the final leaderboard and gamification mechanics.
